SEW MY NAME

Next week we will be celebrating the Eidul Fitri or Hari Raya  which marks the end of the fasting month. I still have not started with the spring cleaning and have a long list of chores to complete.

Usually during this month before the arrival of the festive season there are bazaars which sell almost everything like clothes, accessories and household things. I went to the main Hari Raya bazaar with my husband after buying my curtain materials. Just look at the pretty tops which we call kebaya and the beautiful sarongs(the bottom). Unfortunately it’s too glamorous for a simple Jane like me.

I was attracted to carpets made from bamboo strips and undecided which one to buy.I would have preferred a lighter brown plain color but there was none. Instead they have in  strips of stained colors or painted with motifs . I am still hoping they come in later before the Eid the plain shade which I want which will not make my small house looks very crowded and messy. The friendly stall assistants were just too happy to pose for me.

I will drop by again at the bazaar to check out the carpets again and for some last minute shopping. For now I have to sew my curtains and I hope to complete before the weekend to have time to make some cookies for my visitors.

I was going through old photos and found that of the puff quilt which I sew years back when my youngest son was a baby. I still treasure it till now.

I stopped sewing many years after that as Tamim was a difficult baby until his early childhood years. He was always clinging to me like a koala and just could not bear to be separated from me. I could not even go toilet in peace! See how comfortable he was on my quilt having mummy’s full attention.

Now he is a big boy and I like to tease him how I suffered and that I was the abused mom. He used to cry  and screamed loudly at the slightest occasion that people would give me a kind of what-did-you-do-to-him look. And nowadays I would constantly remind him that he will not love his girlfriend or wife more than me. Ha.. ha..Wishful thinking you would say. Reminds me of the famous quote (by DH Lawrence if my memory serves me right) - A son is a son till he gets a wife, a daughter is a daughter till the end of your life. I guess I will only know if I survive old age.
