This table runner is the machine pieced version of cathedral window.
Finished size is 24″ by 14″.

Materials needed
Unused video cd (approx 4 3/4″ diameter) as circle template.
3″ square template made of cardboard or plastic.
2 colors of materials (approx 0.6 metre each color - 1 for the “front” and 1 for the”back” in contrasting colors.

Pic 1Use the video cd as a template, cut 28 circles for each material. Add 1/4″ seam allowance around it.For each circle patch you need 2 colors of fabrics, 1 for front and 1 for the back. Pic 2With right sides together, sew the circles together without leaving any opening.Iron it flat, clip the curves as necessary. Put the square template in the middle and make a small slit in the “front” fabric just big enough to turn the circle inside out.
Pic 3
Turn all the circles inside out.
Using the square template mark the outline. These markings will be the guide to sew the circles together. Align it such that the cut section is outside the edge of the template . Make such that the slit will be hidden when you fold the sides over as in next picture.
Pic 4With “back” material facing together, join the 2 circles with the markings as the guide. Open the circles something like wings of butterfly. Repeat until you have a whole row of 7 circles.Do likewise for the rest to make a total of 4 rows of 7 circles.
Pic 5Stitch the 4 rows to each other using the markings as a guide. Pic 6You can use the same method to make the cushion covers if you do not want to make the hand pieced version of cathedral window by using 16 pairs of circles for each front of the cushion cover.

Use a circle of bigger diameter eg 6″ if you like, and the square template will be approximately 4″

The pair of cushions on the background were handpieced using the cathedral window pattern. Please click here for instructions.
