How to sew a nappy stacker
Materials needed:
- 1 metre printed material
- 1/4 metre of plain backing
- 1 kid hanger (average size 12″ width)
- 1 piece of cardboard14in X 7in fior the base( round off the 4 edges)
For the printed materials cut:
For the plain material - lining for top and base for a more sturdy nappy stacker.
Neaten the top and bottom edges. Fold the edges length-wise 1″ and press. Right sides facing, sew about 2 1/2″, machine-stitch twice from the bottom-edge. Next, stitch both sides of the folded edges and press it neatly as this will be the front of the nappy-stacker. |
From the 13 by 6″ for both printed and plain material, mark 3/4″ around the sloping edges of the hanger. For the side and bottom at least 1″ allowance to accomodate any change of hanger if the original breaks due to rough handling. Cut and neaten the edges. With right sides facing together stitch together with the backing material all round leaving opening at the bottom. Also stop stitching 1″ before reaching the top of the hangar to leave a gap to insert the hanger. |
From the 16 by 9″, trim the 4 edges of both printed and backing material and neaten. |
Neaten the edges for the ruffle and pocket. Machine stitch at one edge of the material and make tiny pleats as you go along. Fold 1″ for the top of the pocket, press and stitch . |
Attach the ruffles around the opened edges. Baste it in place. |
Attach the main body of the nappy stacker to the top with right sides facing together aligning the middle points together. |
The excess material of the main print are pleated( make box pleat) at the 2 sides. |
Pin and baste them together first before you machine stitch both the top and main body of nappy stacker as above. |
Now you may attach the pocket aligning it 1.5″ from the edge and 7.5″ from the top. Fold a little at the 2 bottom edges just to make it a little nicer. |
Finally attach the base to the body.Mark the miidle points of each side and pin the mid points of the longer edges to the mid points of the front and back of the main body. Pin and pleats any excess at the 4 corners.Put the piece of cardboard in the nappy stacker before you arrange the disposable diapers in it. Usually I will sew a simple case like a pillow case to insert the cardboard. |
