2 Christmas quilt projects using quick-piecing method .

1. Table topper approximate finished size 32.5″ by 32.5″
2. Table runner approximate finished size 41″ by 22″

Basically a set of 5″ squares of two color materials will give you a completed block of two 4″ square of half-triangles OR two 3 3/4″ square of quarter-triangles. A set of 9″ squares will give you a completed block of two 8″ square of half-triangles OR two 7 3/4″ square of quarter-triangles.

Materials to cut:
1. Table topper

  • 10″ by 10″ green prints, 10″ by 10″ cream prints. With a pencil divide the cream print into 4 squares, to become 5″ by 5″ each.
  • 25″ by 10″ red prints , 25″ by 10″ cream prints. Divide the cream print into 2 rows of 5 squares each square measuring 5″ by 5″ each.
  • 8 pcs 4.5″ by 4.5″ cream prints
  • 25″ by 4.5″ and 33″ by 4.5″ green print for the borders
  • 15″ by 15″ red print for the binding (refer to instructions for making continuous bias strip)

2. Table Runner

  • 18″ by 18″ green print, 18″ by 18″ cream print. With a pencil divide the 18″ cream print into 4 squares, to become 9″ by 9″ each.
  • 1.5″ by 45″ strips of red and cream prints. To sew the 2 pieces together along it’s length.
  • 22 strips 8.25″ by 2.5″ of green checks
  • 15″ by 15″ green checks for the binding (refer to instructions in making continuous bias strip)

Cut all the pieces as stated.

On the wrong side of the light print material mark squares as instructed above and draw diagonal lines through the middle of each square . Also make markings 1/4″ on the either sides of the diagonal lines.

With right sides facing together machine stitch on the markings on the either sides of each original diagonal markings.

Cut all the squares and then cut in between the seams to produce triangles.

Open up the triangles and press to obtain the sets of half square triangles.

For table centerpiece, arrange all the half-square triangles together with cream print squares in 6 long rows as shown and then machine all the rows together.

Add the 2 shorter borders on each sides and trim off to exact size of the patched square. Next sew the 2 longer borders and trim off any extras. Sandwich the batting in between the backings and bind the whole patchwork.

For the table runner you should have a total of 8 sets of half-square triangles.

Cut the half square triangles into 2 to produce 16 quarter-square triangles. Rearrange as shown and machine stitch them.

Sew the 2 strips of red and cream prints together and cut into 1.5in widths.

Alternate the pair of red and white print and sew to form a square to be inserted in betweens the strips of green checks.

Arrange all the quarter square triangles and add the green check sashings in between.

Sew the red and cream squares to the green checks creating 3 long rows. Attach to the blocks. Bind the whole table runner with the batting and backing material.
