The Hari Raya Bazaar

Miscellaneous Add comments

Next week we will be celebrating the Eidul Fitri or Hari Raya  which marks the end of the fasting month. I still have not started with the spring cleaning and have a long list of chores to complete.

Usually during this month before the arrival of the festive season there are bazaars which sell almost everything like clothes, accessories and household things. I went to the main Hari Raya bazaar with my husband after buying my curtain materials. Just look at the pretty tops which we call kebaya and the beautiful sarongs(the bottom). Unfortunately it’s too glamorous for a simple Jane like me.

I was attracted to carpets made from bamboo strips and undecided which one to buy.I would have preferred a lighter brown plain color but there was none. Instead they have in  strips of stained colors or painted with motifs . I am still hoping they come in later before the Eid the plain shade which I want which will not make my small house looks very crowded and messy. The friendly stall assistants were just too happy to pose for me.

I will drop by again at the bazaar to check out the carpets again and for some last minute shopping. For now I have to sew my curtains and I hope to complete before the weekend to have time to make some cookies for my visitors.

I like the idea to have bamboo strips under the carpet. it had to protect very good from the cold coming from the floor (we have stone-floors and there is not carpet that can protect you from the cold, specially when there are rains and cold.

I looked on the youngs posing for you and had a question: how their trousers maintain on them?

This bamboo carpet is not meant to be hidden. We use carpet here more as part of home decor and usually cover a small area.Unlike in Europe many homes are fully carpeted meant to protect from cold. I visited London many years back in winter and I didn’t enjoy the cold. Each time I go toilet I wish I was back in my hometown.
And I bet you don’t see the sights as posed by the young boys as Italy is too cold for them to expose themselves like that. They are wearing hipster pants which hang on their hips instead of hanging them on the waist. That is how the young wear their pants.

;-))) What would you say if you were in Russia? And the toilet is out the house about 15-20 meters far from it? Without light, heating etc… :))) I lived one year in central Russia in a forest. It was unforgettable experience for one girl from a city…

In Italy it is not very cold normally (but this year is anomalous), but the houses are often made from a stone that absorbs water. So, the house is very cold and wet. It is +30°C in may but we wear winter clothes inside the house.

Toilet outside the house when I was little too but cannot imagine now after years of having the convenience of the toilet in the house. The big difference our climate is warm so it is not so dreadful even if toilet outside. I don’t think I will like to stay in Italy being wrapped up in winter clothes most of the times. I bet u are used to it.
